Apple Just Changed One Very Important Icon in iOS 11

Logo changes can take some getting used to. Especially if they are of apps that you use on a regular basis. The prime examples of this for me are when Uber and Instagram decided to change their logos. It took me a while to get used to the logo but as time went by, I grew accustomed to it. It seems Apple too had the idea to revamp a few of its popular app icons. With the latest iOS 11 Beta which is the 6th iteration out today, Apple has taken a few icons under the knife to give them a brand new look.

So what Icons did Apple change?

Well, for starters, Apple’s App Store is the first icon to change. No more is the icon a combination of a pencil, ruler and a paintbrush. The new App Store icon looks more like a triangle made of popsicle sticks.

Next up is Apple Maps. Since the release of the first iPhone, the icon for Apple Maps has always been the location of Apple’s HQ. But now, with the opening of Apple Park, the developers seem to have felt that the time was right for a change. As such, the new and improved Apple Maps Icon shows a tiny bit of the Park or the “spaceship” in its icon. In case you didn’t get the reference, Apple is opening up a new campus dubbed “Apple Park”. The park is shaped like a spaceship and has a theatre named after Steve Jobs in remembrance of the co-founder who passed away in 2011.

What other changes are there to iOS 11 Beta 6?

Apart from the revamped icons, all icons also look a lot smoother and are much better looking at higher resolution displays such as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. In addition, a number of live wallpapers are no longer pre-loaded and a number of settings such as auto brightness have had their location shifted to other menus.

Overall, we’re not entirely sure why Apple decided to change the icon of the App store. After all, the pencil, ruler and paintbrush do make a lot more sense compared to the current icon. Then again, since this is a beta version, the designers and developers may even change their minds and revert back to the original icons. Nevertheless, it’s interesting to see what else Apple would change after so long.

If you have an iOS device and you want to run the latest beta of iOS 11, then  you’ll have to sign up for Apple Developer program. In addition, you’ll also have to pay USD $99. Or you can wait till tomorrow when the public beta of iOS 11 is officially launched.
