Last year, we attended an event called Disrupt Asia. Unsure of what to expect, we walked into the halls of Disrupt Asia thinking that it will be a standard event. We ended up with a bunch of dropped jaws and 3 feature length articles. This year too, Disrupt Asia is back once again. On the 16th of May, the official launch of Disrupt Asia 2017 was held. Here’s what we learned at the press conference on what you can expect at Disrupt Asia 2017.
So what’s in store for Disrupt Asia 2017?
In short, pretty much everything that made Disrupt Asia 2016 great. For starters, there’s the conference itself that features a strong panel of speakers. Scheduled to be held on the 12th of July 2017 at the Hilton Colombo, the conference promises a number of talented speakers who will share their life experience and tricks of the trade. In addition, Disrupt Asia 2017 will also provide a platform so that the brains of the operations along with industry experts from all around the world that will share how to make your startup a successful one. But that’s not all.
There’s also the investor forum. This is where Disrupt Asia ensures that potential investors have a knowledge of what investment opportunities are available. Something, that’s vital if we are to ensure that our startup ecosystem grows and leaves its mark on the global stage. Additionally, you’ll also find a number of workshops on various topics at Disrupt Asia 2017. These workshops will cover topics ranging from mastering the lean canvas to becoming Investor Ready to understanding legal aspects in your startup to digital marketing.
There will also be academic workshop at Disrupt Asia 2017. This is primarily aimed at the management teams of public and private universities. The goals of these workshops will be to share how to develop an ecosystem within the universities themselves. With that in mind, the workshop will not only show how create a plan to build great startup ecosystems over the course of the next 12 months. But the most exciting aspect of Disrupt Asia 2017 is likely to be the startup battle.
This year, the startup battle at Disrupt Asia 2017 will be hosted by Hemas Slingshot. In case you’re lost, the startup battle is where you’ll see startups come up on stage and pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. However, this year things are slightly different with multiple stages. Applications for the Startup Battle are now open (update: registrations closed). Once applications close, the shortlisting process will begin.
The shortlisted startups will then be invited to pitch at the semi-finals, which will be held at Edulink International Campus. The three finalists that win at these semi-finals will move onto the finals and pitch on the main stage at Disrupt Asia 2017. The startup that wins at the finals of the Disrupt Asia 2017 Startup Battle will walk away with Rs. 200,000 and a co-working space for 6 months. The runners up will walk away with Rs. 100,000 and a co-working space for 3 months.
Another key element of Disrupt Asia 2017 will be the Startup Exhibition. This is where 36 tech based product companies will showcase their products and services to those attending. So you can get a first hand look at some of the best tech startups in the country. More importantly, you can talk to the men and women behind them to learn the tricks of the trade. If all that doesn’t tickle your fancy, you can always stick around and get to know each other. After all, that’s what networking is all about. So grab a drink, relax and then get to know each other.
How can I be a part of Disrupt Asia 2017?
Well, that depends on what you want to be at Disrupt Asia 2017. You can choose to be a part of the Hemas Slingshot Startup Battle or register as an exhibitor. In addition, you can also purchase tickets for the Investor Forum or a ticket for the Conference itself. Currently, registrations are open for both the Startup Battle and for Exhibitors.
