Failed to get into medical school? Go do software engineering. Failed to get into law school? Go do software engineering. Failed to get into civil engineering? Software engineering!  This is what the University of Sri Jayewardenepura’s Society of Computer Science wants to change. Instead of seeing computer science and software engineering careers as a mere fall back, they want to show society that it is a viable career path.

This is why the Society of Computer Science has organized Aurora 2K15. A computing conference aimed at introducing IT careers to school students and helps improve their IT skills as well. Over time the Society of Computer Science hopes that this will translate into qualified professionals in the IT industry. Qualified professionals who will help Sri Lanka develop a brighter future.

So what is Aurora 2K15 going to offer?

There are 2 sides to Aurora 2K15: the competition and the conference.

The competition is divided into 3 sections, each of which is to test different areas of IT knowledge. The 1st part of the competition is a multiple choice question which will test students in different areas of IT.

Afterwards, the top six teams from schools will advance to the Practical Challenge stage. Think of this stage as a mini-hackathon of sorts. The students will have to develop a software solution and then present it to a team of judges.

Finally, the two best teams from the Practical Challenge stage move on to the On-Stage Quiz Finale. Here, the two teams will have to solve a series of challenges and answer question on a live stage.

The other side of the Aurora 2K15 is the conference. The conference is aimed at introducing the latest advancements in IT. This is because, in recent times it has been noticed that Sri Lankan students don’t have any IT skills beyond what’s in their textbooks. Usually these textbooks contain very simple contents. As such school students don’t really gain any IT skills beyond the bare minimum.

As such, the conference will feature a variety of speakers. These speakers will introduce some of the latest advancements in technology that can’t be found in classrooms. The speakers that will be at Aurora 2K15 are:

  • (Mrs.) Subha Fernando from the University of Moratuwa who will be speaking on the topic of Deep Learning
  • Thejaka Usgoda Arachchi from Intel Sri Lanka who will be speaking about the Internet Of Things
  • Renien Joseph from Zone 24×7 who will be speaking about augmented reality.
