If you’ve tried to sell or buy something online, then you would know that the struggle is indeed quite real. Looking to buy something? You have to figure out if the product you’re buying is legit or not. Similarly, if you’re selling something you need to set a price that is also negotiable but won’t leave you at a loss as well.
Once all that is done, you have to deal with potential buyers of your product or meet the seller who is selling the product you’re interested in. This usually leads to a flurry of phone calls, WhatsApp and/or Viber messages and a plethora of other tasks to get done. Once that’s done, you find out that the seller or buyer lives around 75KM away and so you either have to decide if you’re actually going through with the plan or just give up and try some other way.
I’m pretty sure at least one of you reading can attest to this scenario as it’s a personal experience. Having been through all this, I came across an interesting app called “LookApp”
Offered and Developed by LookApp (Pvt) Ltd, LookApp is a platform to buy and sell products. But there’s a few things different. Firstly, the platform is aimed at mobile users with Android being the key platform and the iOS platform under development. Secondly, rather than having people contact you via your mobile number, especially if it’s at a busy time, buyers and sellers can negotiate prices from within the app itself. If there is communication required, the app has a feature for that too. The key highlight here is that when compared to other platforms for buying and selling, LookApp does not hsare your personal information at all. Not even to the Seller. So you can rest assured that your details remain private and that you won’t be heckled with numerous phone calls.
In addition, LookApp also show you a general list of products that are for sale from people in the immediate area. If you’re on the lookout for a good deal with no particular product in mind, this is actually a pretty good way to find stuff that you feel is a good deal
As stated above, LookApp is currently available for Android with the iOS platform launching in August. As soon as you launch the app, you are greeted with the loading screen with a login form. If you already have an account on LookApp, you can either login using your mobile number or your Facebook account. If you are a new user, then you can register by entering your name and email address followed by your phone number.
Despite LookApp requiring these details, it’s only used as a method of account identification and will not be shared with any 3rd parties. Once you have logged in and/or signed up for a new account, you can literally start selling your product or service within your neighborhood in Sri Lanka in less than 30 seconds. You can also create your own store and start selling immediately.
Buying Goods on LookApp
The default configuration of the app is to display a list of items for sale within a radius of 1KM.
You can change this distance and set up a custom filter by clicking the text. This opens up a number of other search features. For example, you can search for special offers in your area such as new items and free items. You can also search by categories such as Fashion and accessories, Electronics, Property etc.
Clicking each category will list down the available products for your perusal. If you want additional details regarding a product, you can click the product and from there you will have the option to contact the seller, ask a question or even share the product advertisement via social media platforms. If you see a product you like, you can star it so that you can come back to it later if you’re preoccupied at the moment.
The Advanced filter gives you a much greater scope of control. You can specify what product you’re searching for and you can also determine a search radius giving you a better view of where the results are. You can also choose individual categories if you so wish to. Looking for a product in a particular price range? LookApp give you the ability to set your price range with a minimum and maximum price range thus giving you greater control over what you’re searching for.
You can also make an offer for a product (AKA negotiate) and see if the seller responds to your offer as well.
Selling Products on LookApp
If you wish to sell an item, the process is quite straightforward. Simply click the camera icon at the bottom of the app on the main screen. From here you can enter details about the product you are selling. You can enter the product name, and also provide a description about the product. Once that is done, you will have to provide a price and also choose a category of the product. You can then set the location of where you wish to sell the item from. Last but not least, make sure you include a few clear images of the product so that those interested can take a good look at it.
In terms of personalization, a history of all products purchased and sold by you are recorded within LookApp itself along with a history of chats carried out between a seller and/or buyer of products. You can also see a list of items you have added to your watch list in case you’re interested in purchasing them. You can also switch between Sinhala and English as your primary language if you feel inclined to do so.
Keep up the good work, LookApp
Overall, I feel LookApp has done a pretty decent job with providing a mobile platform to buy and sell products. The fact that your personal data isn’t provided to 3rd parties is perhaps the icing on the cake as it does away annoying nuisance callers especially if you have already sold the product or are not looking to sell it.
A small hiccup I noticed was that the search criteria could use a bit of a tune up. For example, when entering “Samsung” as a keyword, despite all the Samsung results, you tend to get the occasional random product that has no relevance to Samsung. A minute detail, but if it can be fixed then the app would pretty much be solid.
If you’re on the lookout to sell something or you’re looking to purchase a product, give LookApp a shot. Since your personal details remain intact, that should encourage users to use LookApp as opposed to other market platforms.
