Google Business Groups (GBG) is a community of business professionals around the world who come together in their local areas to discuss and share knowledge about Google technologies and other issues towards making a successful business. The March Meet-up, was held on 21st March 2013 at APIIT city campus premises with around 80+ participants.

The highlight of this month’s event was the participation of Mr. Julian Persuad, Managing Director of Google for Sales and Operations in South and South East Asia. This was also his first visit to Sri Lanka and complemented on the great hospitality he’s been receiving in the community since his arrival.

Julian spoke on the topic of “Innovation at Google” where he touched several key strategies and techniques carried out by Google Inc to bring out the best from their employees so as to remain on the top. The “Nine Notions of Innovation” which is a common presentation made by Google employees around the world was also shared at the event along with examples of how those notions have worked out for Google in bringing out their best products.

Julian also pointed out that, although many companies would disagree, spending on their employees actually is an investment rather than a wastage, since when employees are happy, their productivity is greater, whereas when it’s the other way around, productivity is low. This was the reason he said that Google has some of the “most awesome” office spaces of any company in the world. When asked by a member of the audience on how could a guy with a great business idea approach Google, Julian said “Google can give only the tools needed and not the solution. Its up to the entrepreneurs to use these tools and come up with innovating solutions.” Stressing on the importance of innovation he further pointed out that “Innovation is not something owned by the big or American companies anymore and anyone can be innovative and be successful.”
