It was late 2014 when we first heard that Google would be bringing Street View to Sri Lanka. After that, we were only given a few teases about Street View. For many months, we would see the iconic Google Street View cars, but yet hear no news about its launch. Then earlier this year, we finally got an update.
The team at DotCom Systems became the 1st Local Street View Trusted Photographers to create virtual tours of Sri Lankan businesses. It was a minor update announcing the arrival of a subcomponent of Street View. However, we still had no news and Google Street View was still unavailable. Today, a few months later, Google Street View is finally available in Sri Lanka.
For two years, Google has had its special Street View cars travel almost every road in Sri Lanka. Over the course of these two years, these cars were collecting panoramic images on their journeys. These images were then stitched together to create the amazing virtual tour of Sri Lanka, which you can now access on Google Maps. To access Street View all you need is to drag the little yellow stick figure on the bottom of the screen, onto a street view mapped road.
So how much of Sri Lanka has been covered by Street View? Approximately 90% of the country has been covered. Needless to say, the local Street View team has been busy these past two years. They’ve (literally) gone out of their way to produce an amazing virtual tour of Sri Lanka.
With Street View, you can now take a look at any place before visiting. It could be the stunning views at ella rocks.
Perhaps the beaches of Trincomalee
Maybe even Mirissa.
You can even travel across the roads of Horton plains.
There’s over 50,000 KM of roads to explore on Google Maps Street View. Just remember that this is called Street View. This means you’ll be able to easily find places, but not take a look at them. Unless, one of Sri Lanka’s few Certified Google Street View Trusted photographers from DotCom Systems, went and created a virtual tour of the landmark you’re looking at.
In case you got lost, a Certified Google Street View Trusted photographer is a person that has been certified by Google, to create virtual tours of businesses and landmarks on their behalf. The virtual tours they create are a part of Google Business View. With Google Business View you can take virtual tours of businesses and certain landmarks as well.
In Sri Lanka, only 4 photographers: Athif Nazeer, Jaufer Mohamed, Mohamed Ziyan and Fasha Hussain from DotCom Systems are Certified Google Street View Trusted photographers. This means that they are Sri Lanka’s first and right now only people that create virtual tours for Google Street Business View. Last month, they proudly represented Sri Lanka at the Google Street View Trusted Elite Members MeetUp 2016 held in Singapore.
It was at this regional meetup, that their hard work was recognized. Their virtual tour of Aliya Resort & Spa is considered to be one of the best virtual tours of any location in the South-East Asian region. As of today, they have created virtual tours for over 60+ businesses which are featured on Google Maps. To request a shoot to create a virtual tour of your business on google maps, click here.
Needless to say, it’s been a long 2 years since Street View first came to Sri Lanka. In those two years, it has (literally) come a long way and the end result is amazing. The Street View cars still have a few more roads to travel. But right now, we are happy to see that Street View is here and operational here in Sri Lanka.
