Few months back, we bought you the story of the new tech based reality show, Kotiyak Vatina Adahasak (or KVA for short). From over 350 participants from the initial stage, it came down to the best 24 ideas. The show has came quite a distance since then. Here are the 8 finalists of KVA.
1.The vehicle with no steering wheel
What would you do if life literally took away your arms? Well, Samantha decided to build his own vehicle. Years ago, Samantha Fernando fell victim to a tragic accident while working as an electrical technician. Rather than feeling helpless, he decided to build his own mode of transport, one that would let him operate with his feet. This includes a fully functioning accelerator, brakes and clutch, all the essentials for the working model. Although the vehicle can only run at around 20 kmph at a maximum level, Samantha states that this is more than enough to get one’s daily chores done.
2. Smart Boiler
Meet Shashi Sampath, an innovator on Kotiyak Vatina Adahasak with the concept of a Smart industrial boiler. At present, industrial boilers in factories and production plants require manual labor in terms of operation and maintenance. This puts the lives of the workers (and at times, even the entire workforce of the factory) at risk everyday. This is where the Smart boiler comes in. So how does it work? According to Shashi, the implementation comes with the control panel. In the smart boiler, the user would be allowed to operate the machine remotely, as opposed to handling it manually. Additionally as a safety precaution, should the boiler ever come to an over-pressure state, steam would be released and the boiler would shut down. The smart boiler also comes with an app that would allow the user to monitor the whole process of the boiler.
3. Intelligent Solar Tracking System
Supun and his team want to increase the efficiency of power generation in solar panels. They want to increase it by 35-45% to be exact. According to the team, this can be achieved if the solar panels are held perpendicular to the sun rays. Through Supun’s system, the panels are able to constantly rotate and adjust its position via GPS location tracking accordingly. In terms of applications, Supun states that these types of solar panel systems would be ideal for commercial use such as solar farms and even for residential use.
4. Advanced Forged Document/Currency Detector
Hailing from Mount Lavinia, Asiri had always been one for innovations. Among his inventions is his fraudulent currency detector, which we saw on kva. Simply put, this will allow one to detect fraudulent currency more accurately. This portable device is capable of analyzing 29 security features that comes with document/ currency note detection. Talking about the idea behind the product, Asiri wanted to build an affordable device with more security detection features, as opposed to the currently available devices in the local market which could only detect UV light. In addition to detecting currency notes, the portable device could also analyze ID cards, driver’s license, passports and other related identification.
5. Smart Headlight Assistant
Driving at night could often be tedious and even frustrating at times. One of the reasons for this, would be flashing headlights from incoming vehicles. Meet the 18 year old contestant of Kotiyak Vatina Adahasak: Saluka who wants to solve this problem with his Smart Headlight Assistant. Utilizing image processing, the smart headlight assistant will automatically dim the headlights with incoming vehicles. The device will also dim headlights if the vehicle gets too close to another car during traffic.
6. Remote Cash Deposit Mechanism
Imagine if you wanted to deposit that spare change you’ve been having for a while. Naturally, not everyone would want to go to the bank just to deposit a few hundred bucks and it might not mean much either. But if you live in a rural community this may not be the case. This is where Sunil Jayasinghe’s idea on Kotiyak Vatina Adahasak comes into play. Sunil uses the same principle as one would use to reload a prepaid phone connection, reload cards. The difference here is that instead of reloading your phone, the card will deposit a specified amount to your account. How it works specifically is that you would need to buy a scratch card and SMS the relevant pin to a certain number and your account gets deposited with the corresponding amount, just like in a reload card.
One of the common issues faced by smartphone users today is the problem of high battery consumption and performance. Prathieshna’s solution to this problem was to offload the phone’s tasks to nearby computers, thus improving the smartphone’s performance and battery consumption. Furthermore, this platform would also let you utilize those computing devices that you may no longer use on a regular basis. According to Prathieshna, Cyber Dock will allow a smartphone’s performance to increase as high as 22 times and battery capacity by 17 times.
8. Laser Drilling
Last but not least, comes Aruna from Kandy with his laser cone centering device. This system will essentially form a conical laser path which is used to assist the drilling process.
