Located at No. 409, R. A. De Mel Mawatha (almost opposite Edulink International Campus), Mobitel’s X Station was opened on the 15th of August 2017 and we got a chance to see exactly what the hype was about. In case you were wondering, Mobitel’s X Station is the first hi-tech Internet of Things (IoT) concept store of its kind in the country.
As you walk into Mobitel’s X Station, the first thing you notice is in fact that there are many things to notice. Aimed at being the first to bringing future technology to Sri Lanka, the X Station acts as a hub of sorts for showcasing the latest in technology products and services. The primary theme of X Station is the Internet of Things or IoT and that plays quite a large part in its infrastructure.
For example, at the Home and Home Automation zone, you would find an Apple TV with accompanying remote and camera, along with a Google Home device. The Apple TV is connected to the internet and can stream your favorite music and video at HD and UHD resolutions. The Google Home device will give you details such as the weather and live traffic updates and will also inform you of upcoming events in your calendar. The room also has integrated smart lighting that connects to the Google Home and an accompanying app so you can set the lighting of the room according to your mood.
Staying healthy was never easier
The Health zone has a variety of devices geared towards making you live a healthier life. These include devices to check your pressure, weight and even a smart thermometer that you hold in front of your forehead to check your temperature.
Designing is just a click away
Moving along, we took a look at the Design zone. This makes use of Microsoft’s HoloLens and a 3D printer to interact with design elements. If you’re a fashion designer or an artist, you can use the tech here to design some clothes or even draw a painting and then interact with the elements in it.Once you’re done, you can proceed to print it.
Fancy being a Racer?
Similarly, if you’re a gamer who wants to experience new realms with virtual reality, you could step into the world of a racer at the Game Zone which has a PS4 Pro connected to a PlayStation VR and a Logitech G29 Steering wheel.
The Interactive Zone makes use of a large screen that is connected to a Logitech C270 webcam. If you’re in the mood to pose for a funky photograph by yourself of with your friends, you can do so and even have the photo printed via a small photo printer located in the zone.
There’s even more stuff to see
Apart from these zones, the X Station also had several other devices on display. This included a number of drones such as the DJI Inspire, Phantom 2 and the Mavic Pro. Next to these drones, you will find a number of mobile devices such as Nokia’s latest lineup of smartphones, a few tablets by Samsung and an assortment of other mobile phones. Fancy a new cable for your smartphone or a charger to use in your vehicle? You can purchase some of these items as well.
X Station even has a gaming cafe
Located upstairs in the X Station you will find a seating area along with a eChanneling booth in case you need to schedule an appointment with your doctor. Right next to this is a small gaming café sponsored by Sri Lanka Telecom, the parent company of Mobitel. Here, budding gamers can indulge in some single player games such as Split Second or team up for some multiplayer action with Dota 2 or Counter Strike: Global Offensive.
Good job, Mobitel
Overall, we like what Mobitel has done with X Station. Walking into the place feels a bit like Christmas to me because of all the cool gadgets and technology, but hey that’s just me. If you haven’t yet gone to X Station and you want to see what it’s all about, you can drop by and take a look for yourself. The staff are extremely helpful and will answer any questions you have. You can even try out the equipment they have on display and ask any question regarding how they work, etc. Hats off to Mobitel for this endeavor and we hope that it has fruitful results.
