We run for charity. We walk for different causes. And now, thanks to the efforts of two young organizers, we can help make the world a better place – by gaming.
Welcome to Play for Change, an enterprising project in aid of the Arunodeva Mawatha Pera Pasala, a needy school on the outskirts of Rajagiriya. Play for Change will be a Call of Duty 4 Promod gaming tournament that has gamers battling it out at Venus CyberSoft, Mount Lavinia, for the grand prize. All profits go directly to the Pera Pasala.
Playing for charity is not new to the world. International movements like Child’s Play, and even game sales like the Humble Indie Bundles all contribute to good causes. This is, however, the first time something of the sort is being done in Sri Lanka. People have run for charity, walked for charity, even protested, but never have Sri Lankans played for charity.
This project, the brainchild of Namith Manchanayake and Fredrick Kulatunga, two enterprising individuals who’ve been actively involved with the gaming community – and joining them in organizing the event is Tech Morph, a Sri Lankan gaming community of considerable repute. From what we hear, Play for Change has picked up a good amount of funding. Sarasavi Bookshop, Ray bans, L.P Perera, Raffels Medicare, Spanckaa Gerneral Merchants are joining this new project as sponsors. As expected, we’ll be there, charting the progress of this unique and worthwhile cause.
