One is among the biggest events in the Sri Lankan eSports calendar. The other is among the grandest celebration of Geek Culture. And both are happening this weekend! From Friday morning until Sunday evening, BMICH will be filled with enthusiastic geeks and determined gamers. This weekend, we are going to see both the Sri Lanka Cyber Games Grand Finale 2016 and the Colombo Comic Con. Here’s what we can expect across all three days from both SLCG 2016 and the Colombo Comic Con.
What’s we’ll see at SLCG 2016
The Sri Lanka Cyber Games or SLCG as it’s better known, is among the oldest and grandest of all tournaments and events in the history of Sri Lankan eSports. Organized by Gamer.LK, SLCG is now in its 9th year and it has steadily grown into the behemoth it is today. This year, SLCG 2016 held its qualifying rounds in 4 regions, including Kandy and Jaffna.
The winners from these qualifiers will soon fight for the glory of being recognized as the best of the best. This clash will take place at BMICH over the weekend. This is where the SLCG 2016 Grand Finale and Games Festival will take place. Speaking at a press conference announcing the launch of the event, Raveen Wijethilake – CEO of Gamer.LK shared that approximately 2500 gamers will be participating and they expect almost 20,000 people will be visiting SLCG 2016 to watch the matches.
This year, the matches will be played across 10 games. The full list of these games are as follows:
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
- DOTA 2
- Counter Strike: Global Offensive
- League of Legends
- Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Xbox)

What we’ll see at the Colombo Comic Con
Happening in parallel to SLCG 2016 is the Colombo Comic Con. Organized by The Geek Initiative, this will be a grand celebration of Sri Lanka’s geek culture. This year we can expect to see talented cosplayers along with a market of vendors selling all forms of geek memorabilia. But that’s only scratching the surface of this year’s Colombo Comic Con.
As with the iconic San Diego Comic Con, the Colombo Comic Con will also feature a series of panels. These panels will celebrate the creators that make uniquely Sri Lankan art. Some of the panels we’ll see are by Arimac Digital talking about their game Kanchayudha and PRUVE Comics talking about their upcoming web series. But that’s not all. There’s also going to be Laser Tag and of course, video games at the Colombo Comic-Con. Additionally, if you’re lucky you can grab some tickets from Majestic Cinema’s for Rogue One.
