Sri Lanka leaves its mark at the Mobile World Congress 2016

A few days back, we shared the news about 10 startups that’ll be representing Sri Lanka at the 4YFN programme of the Mobile World Congress 2016. Today, we are happy to say that Sri Lanka has not one but TWO great achievements to its name at the Mobile World Congress. One was by a well-established giant in the telco industry and the other by a young startup.

The first achievement was at the finals of the Global Mobile Innovators Tournament. Previously, we’ve covered the story of the Kaawo team that became finalists at this competition. Yesterday, the Kaawo team made their final pitch at the grand finale of the Global Mobile Innovators Tournament. However, this time, things were a bit different.

The Kaawo we knew as a collaborative storytelling platform had transformed into a cool smart radio that delivers a personalised radio stream. Sadly, the Kaawo team didn’t walk away as winners at the finals but getting this far itself is an achievement. They beat over 1200 startups across the world and stood proudly on the global stage, waving the Sri Lankan flag. This is a proud achievement we believe is worth a round of applause.

The second achievement was at the Global Mobile Awards 2016. This is an awards ceremony hosted by the GSMA that happens at the Mobile World Congress. With competitors from across the globe, the purpose of these awards is to showcase the latest and best mobile products, apps, devices, services, and initiatives to the industry and the world.

It was at this global competition that Dialog was announced as the winner of the Best Mobile Network Solution for Serving Customers award, for its Selfcare app. This isn’t the first time Dialog has returned home with a trophy from the Global Mobile Awards. Last year, Dialog returned home with the Best Technology Enabler award for its Ideamart platform and the Connect Life award for eZCash.

Congratulations Dialog and congratulations Mogo Solutions. We are glad to see Sri Lankan companies, both young and established, taking the global stage. Here’s hoping that we’ll see more proud moments where Sri Lankan companies are crowned as winners when they get on the global stage.

  1. Incredible. Have you guys seen that Dialog Selfcare app? It’s a UX disaster. If that’s the best the world can do, we can imagine how far behind the telecom industry is when it comes to usable online services.
