Summarized: The biggest announcements Apple made yesterday

Last night, we saw a ton of announcements from Apple. After months of speculation, Apple finally unveiled the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Additionally, it also unveiled the next generation of the Apple Watch and the AirPods to replace earphones. Here’re the biggest announcements from the event, summarized.

The new iPhone

On the outside, both phones look very similar to their predecessors. So what’s new about the iPhone 7? For starters, it’s water resistant. Yes, you can finally take an underwater selfie with an iPhone, using its new 12MP camera.Furthermore, Apple has also redesigned the iconic home button with the iPhone 7. The new home button is force sensitive similar to the trackpads in the recent MacBooks. The iPhone 7 also takes the Taptic Engine feedback system from the Apple Watch.

Arguably, the biggest change Apple made with the iPhone 7 is the removal of the headphone jack. In its place are the lightning connector and stereo speakers. This means, if you want to use your current headphones, you’ll need to use an adapter. The good news is that Apple is giving a free adapter for 3.5mm headphones with every iPhone 7. So thankfully, you can still use high-quality headphones instead of the ones Apple provides. Nonetheless, it’s still an unnecessary hassle by Apple, punishing those who like good audio.

The iPhone 7 Plus

As for the iPhone 7 Plus, it has everything it’s younger brother does along with a few things extra. The iPhone 7 Plus comes with a bigger screen, a bigger battery, and a second camera. One of the lenses is the equivalent of 28mm for wide angle shots, like that of a standard iPhone camera. Whereas, the second lens is the equivalent of 60mm. You can switch between the two lenses with a tap on the iPhone 7 Plus camera app. And so, the iPhone 7 Plus becomes the latest phone to come with dual cameras.

Apple Watch Series 2

Apple also unveiled the next generation of the Apple Watch. Dubbed, the Apple Watch Series 2, it too looks very similar to its predecessor at first glance. It comes with square customizable watch face, a battery that’ll survive a day and the usual watch dial to zoom and scroll. Not too different from its predecessors. So what’s new?

For starters, the Apple Watch Series 2 comes with a water-resistant shell and GPS. This means you can take a swim and the new Apple Watch will know exactly where you are swimming without being paired to your phone. Additionally, the new smartwatch comes with an upgraded processor, a brighter display, and a better GPU. Essentially, the new Apple Watch Series 2 brings a few incremental upgrades to the table. Nonetheless, Apple’s smartwatch is a leader in its category. According to Tim Cook, Apple’s watch line became the 2nd most valuable line in the world, only behind Rolex. And it achieved this only 18 months since its debut.

The Apple AirPods

After killing the headphone jack, Apple introduced new wireless earbuds. Yes, you read that right. Apple’s new earbuds, which it calls AirPods are completely wireless. You can connect your AirPods to any Apple device by opening the AirPods case and tapping connect. Afterward, you can listen to anything, without any wires dangling around you.

This is thanks to a new Apple chip called the W1, which handles the audio and wireless connection. Additionally, each AirPod has dual accelerometers and optical sensors. With these sensors, the AirPod’s know when they’re in your ear and if you remove them, your music is paused. The AirPod’s also come with a mic, so you can take phone calls and ask Siri funny questions.

So what’s the watch? Well for starters, you’ll need an Apple device running iOS 10, watchOS 3 or macOS Sierra. Secondly, a pair of AirPods will reportedly last for 5 hours until you need to put them back into a special charging case. The charging case itself will last 25 hours. It’s bad enough that we have to worry about the battery level of our phones, but now our earbuds too? Here’s hoping that the sound quality from the AirPods is mind-blowing to justify a $150 purchase.
