There’s a new ride hailing app in Colombo called Taxiyak, which is a product of Airport Travel Holdings. Established in 1996, Airport Travels Holdings may not be all that familiar to you. Through their 21 years of being in Sri Lanka, the company has been working hard to create their own niche for passenger transportation.
What initially launched as a service to transport passengers to and from the airport quickly grew into a specialized service of passenger transportation across all parts of Sri Lanka. Apart from the regular transports, Airport Travels Holdings also organizes package tours and trips catering to both local and foreign travelers who want to experience Sri Lanka.
Recently, the company has also taken strides to enter the taxi market as well by means of a mobile app. In a market already dominated by Uber and PickMe in the market alongside Kangaroo cabs etc., Airport Travels Holdings hopes to bring something entirely new to the table. This is Taxiyak.
What is Taxiyak?
Taxiyak is the latest taxi booking and trip scheduling app available for both Android and iOS. Using the Taxiyak app, you can book a taxi quickly and be on your way as fast as possible.
The Taxiyak service is already available via the web but in this day and age, a good app can make all the difference between success and failure. This is where the team at Taxiyak want to excel in. Granted, building an app of this nature is by no means an easy task. The team had their fair share of challenges.
It’s not an easy road to travel on
One of the challenges that the team faced was about recruiting the right talent who had the right fit for the role. They need to have a balance between their skills and also their attitude. What started off as a team of 4 technical developers and 8 operational executives, has now developed into a family of 35 dedicated, determined and enthusiastic individuals.
Finding drivers for their platform was the next big challenge. With rival companies already taking a lion’s share of the market, the team at Taxiyak had to identify price points and commission structures that would satisfy the drivers and simultaneously be cost-effective to the passenger as well.
The final challenge was to ensure the systematic roll out of the app during all stages of development. This means that deadlines have to be met on the with everything in working condition. The team carried out multiple QA and testing elements to maintain system integrity, from top down of the organization.
With these obstacles handled, the team behind Taxiyak would now have to find a way to attract customers if they were to be successful. This means that the process of booking a taxi has to be simple and straightforward.
Booking a taxi
As we stated above, booking a vehicle through Taxiyak is already possible through the company’s website. The problem here is that this process is incredibly time consuming and requires a lot of back and forth between the company and the passenger. The app aims to do away with all the hassle, offering a simple solution. According to the folks behind the Taxiyak app, you can book a taxi in a number of ways.
This is where you can book a taxi with just three clicks. You can take your pick from Nanos, Minis, Cars and even Vans. The app is optimized in such a way that the app only requests drivers in the immediate vicinity of the passenger, thus reducing waiting times for the passenger. For the drivers, this means more hires as well.
Simply select the type of vehicle, you want. Then enter your pickup location and the drop off location and press the “Book Now” button. That’s 3 steps and your vehicle is on the way to pick you up. If you’re unsure which vehicle, just press “Book Now”, and the closest options are displayed.
Apart from booking taxis to go about your daily work, you can even schedule and plan trips with friends and family as well. The app has a number of tour costing packages for you to choose from. Further support can be carried out online or by means of a phone call. Additionally, holding fast to its roots of airport transfers, the Taxiyak app can also be used to find a taxi for an airport drop or pickup.
Additionally, the Taxiyak app can also be used to book tuks as well. Similar to how PickMe operates, set your pickup and dropoff destination and you can book a tuk. Tuk rates start off at LKR 50 for the first kilometer traveled and LKR 40 per each additional kilometer.
The Donation Meter
This is something interesting that we saw. At the end of each and every trip, passengers can make a donation for families with kidney or heart patients, and or help provide for those suffering from kidney/heart disease. All you have to do is to select the desired amount. The donations will also be used to support the community and other social causes.
Is it just another taxi app?
While there’s no doubt that services such as PickMe and Uber have a greater portion of the market, they aren’t perfect. Thus, Taxiyak brings a breath of fresh air for everyone. The trip scheduling feature and the donation meter adds a nice touch as well.
Payments for vehicles booked through Taxiyak can be done either by cash (as usual) or via the Sampath Pay App. Even though the feature is listed down on the app, attempting to select it will result in an error message stating that the feature is currently unavailable. Guess we’ll just have to wait for it to be available for use.
