Since its inception in 2010, TweetupSL has become one of the most sought after Public Social Media events of the year in Sri Lanka. The event has blown up from its simple beginnings to this social phenomenon, capturing the local Twittersphere, and bringing its members to an offline stage where they get to connect and make use of the amazing connections and networks they have built through Twitter.
TweetupSL 7 was held on 16th December 2017, at Trace Expert City premises. For its 7th iteration, TweetupSL 7 had over 350 registrations and 200+ participants at the event. Tweeps from all over the country ranging from all age groups showed up to this highly anticipated episode of TweetupSL.
Kicking things off
The event was hosted by two well-known tweeps, Shenal Gunasekara(@ShenalG) and Amila Gamage(@KawdaBoy). The event kicked off with one minute of silence, in respect of Sarath Sathiamoorthy, a vital member of the Twitter community which was a core component in building this event for what it is today, and building this amazing network of people around it. The proceedings were made colorful by several performances by local artists, such as Ridma Weerawardane, and Kasun Gunasekara aka @KaluMallii.
It was for a worthy cause too
The event also featured great social causes initiated by Rotaract Club of Informatics Institute of Technology (RCIIT). The tweeps pitched in with their contributions to the projects that were undertaken by RCIIT and a stall was available throughout the events for people to reach out, and get more information about the projects.
The event also featured fun games for tweeps to participate. These took the form of Paper Dance, Karaoke Event and a Secret Train, all which entertained the tweeps.
TweetupSL is also known to give away awards for various categories, recognizing the contributions done to the local twittersphere, may it be light hearted in comedy or bringing in fast and reliable news to the platform. Each year, tweeps nominate and select the highlights for each of the categories.
